Google May Have to Answer Difficult Question over Privacy Issues with Buzz

Google has seemingly run into trouble with its new social networking and messaging application, Google Buzz. The Internet biggie, which has made its presence felt in all sectors of web and mobile technology, could never have imagined such a negative response to Buzz.

Buzz was launched in the second week of February with the aim of providing the users of Gmail, Google’s email service, with an easy tool to share links, photos and videos along with comments like a regular social networking site. Many believed that the introduction of Buzz would lead to a new age in social networking and were optimistic about the service. However, the service has met with biting criticism from privacy rights groups. Since Buzz is integrated with Gmail, nearly 176 million Gmail users were automatically pushed into using Buzz whether they wanted it or not. Its privacy features have also come under sharp attackusers are led to follow everyone in their Gmail contacts by default. The privacy concerns regarding Buzz were so high that Google had to apologise and change some of its features.

The minor changes made in Buzz have not solved the problem and now with the Electronic Privacy Information Centre (Epic) in the U.S. is knocking on the doors of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Google may have to answer a few difficult questions. The Epic wants the FTC to order Google to inform and seek permission from all its users before modifying privacy settings in future. It is also demanding that Google be stopped from using Gmail address books to gather social networking lists.

The present case and last year’s Facebook outrage (when the site changed its privacy setting without user’s knowledge) show that social networking cannot be used to abuse users’ privacy.
